My Western comedy tour is finished. It is nice to be home and sleeping in my own bed. I love going out west; making new friends and working the fantastic crowds there. This time however, I really missed my family and pillows.
Pillows you say? The pillow is a huge factor in how I sleep. I never think about packing my own until I get on the road. Out of 8 different hotel/motel rooms the best pillows were in the worst room. Now the people who run The Derrick Motel are very friendly and accommodating. The room itself had some really bad points, and some really good things.
Not one to focus on the bad, when making coffee in the morning I always let the water run for a bit. This way it’s not so cloudy when you put it in the coffee maker. The longer I ran the cold water in my room at The Derrick the cloudier it got. Scary cloudy. I didn’t make coffee very often in that room in the morning.
On the positive side of things, along with wonderful pillows, I could watch TV while in the shower and on the toilet. Women probably won’t appreciate that as much as the guys.
The shows were a lot of fun and fraught with a wide variety of people. One night in Manning Alberta I am performing in front of 50 intoxicated oil rig workers and their wives & girlfriends. Two nights later I’m in front of 300 suit and fancy dress wearing types in Calgary following a speech by Lanny MacDonald. This tour was all about properly reading the audience. And on the two shows when I didn’t read them right, it was about switching gears and getting them back on my side.
All in all, I was on the road for just over 4400 kms. Had an incredible time. Thanks Bob!
There are many comedians who have blogs on their websites. One such blog is on www.andrewgrose.com. While reading it I discovered an open invitation for all comedians, pro / amateur, independent / Yuks, to attend a lunch meeting. So glad I found this. Not because I don’t enjoy holding up in a crappy motel room trying to find something good on the television drinking cloudy coffee. These guys and girls have an awesome idea. Usually they gather for chow and conversation. This time, they added bowling to the mix. What a great way to spend a couple of hours. Big thanks to Andrew Grose, Howie Miller, Kerry Unger, Paul Sveen & his girlfriend (so sorry, her name escapes me right now), Paul Myrehaug, Winston, Kendal, Matt, Ashley and Jen (I know I am missing someone else) for making me feel so welcome. Also, for inspiring me to try to get comics in the Toronto area together for some food and fun.
